Ex Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez Tests Positive for Covid-19

Qatari club Al Sadd SC have announced that head coach Xavi Hernandez has tested positive for the novel coronavirus pandemic.

In a message thread from the 40-year old made available by the club on social media revealed that he will not be on the returning team list when football activities resume this weekend while also stating that assistant coach, David Prats will replace him temporarily.

The four times Uefa Champions League winner with Barcelona said:“Today I will not be able to accompany my team in the return to official competition.

“David Prats, reserve coach, will take my place as head of the technical team.

“A few days ago, following the QSL protocol, I tested positive in my most recent Covid-19 test.

“Luckily, I feel perfectly fine, but following the protocol, I will remain isolated until I have overcome it.

“When the medical authorities allow me, I will return to my daily routine and work more eagerly than ever.

“I thank all the authorities, especially those which allowed us the means for an early detection that avoids more spreading of the virus and guarantees the normal continuation of the season.

“A hug, and see you soon on the football pitch!”

The veteran midfielder joined Al Sadd as a player in 2015 before he was handed a managerial role in 2019. Prior to his contract expiry, he was heavily linked in a return to his former club Barcelona before he extended his stay in Qatar by another year.

Xavi Hernandez men are set to take on Al Khor on Saturday following the return of Qatari league after four months of Covid-19 suspension but he will now self-isolate in order to undergo recovery process and reduce the spread of the virus.
